I am planting some orange rocket barberry and gold flame spireas in an area which is about 12 feet from woodland, behind them are daffodils. I had grown roses there which did not grow well because of roots from nearby trees. My question is would it be better to plant them out in large containers, (actually burying the containers ), so that they are not engulfed with the same roots.

Yes, this is called pot in pot. This is a wonderful way to get the best of both worlds. You will bury the same size pot, in the ground, as your plants container size. That way you can take the pot in and out with no problem.
