Should I Use Weed Barrier Or Not

I have recently installed a border in my front garden, 9″ or so deep, with concrete edging, the rest is gravel. I am planting plants to supress weeds and also keep cats away. I have put down weed barrier mat, but now not sure if I have done the right thing.

They are helpful in suppressing weeds. Some weeds will just grow on top of the barrier. These articles should help:
