Shade and Sun Plants

We have a new flower bed running along the front of our house about 60′ long. During the winter no sun shines on it at all. From about May to Sept. , it gets the afternoon sun. What kinds of plants should we plant there? Since it is at the front of the house, I would like perennials–some that look nice during the winter as well as the summer. We live in North Carolina.
