Plaster of paris and paper mache will not work. But, you can use the cheap, non-clumping kitty litter and I mean look for the cheapest kind. It is typically made of clay and only clay. You can use it as is (the balls will look a little chunky but they will still work) or you can send it through a blender or food processor to make it feel more like the pottery clay dry mix.
