Sap

I have a question in regards to tree sap. I am not a gardener but I thought I could look it up and nowhere has the answer that I would like. I live in central Alberta, Canada and the trees here are dripping sap and it’s not a little bit; it is quite a lot. We have had high temperatures this last month and before that it was a cool spring. Would this cause it? And what does it mean? I can’t remember what it means by a tree having too much sap (it can coat a hood of a van within two-three days).
