Saguaro Cactus

Our church has a saguaro cactus that is about 22 feet high with multiple arms. It must have received too much water in past years as the coating around the core is sloughing off and the lower arms (each weighing several hundred pounds) are breaking off.The large core that is exposed seems very solid and hard so I don’t see a danger of the entire plant falling onto the church during a wind storm. Of course the lower 6 feet looks ugly as the outer casing has rotted off.Is there anything we can do to save this beautiful plant or is it destined to die and we must remove it?

I recommend you contact a qualified Arborist in your area to inspect this beautiful specimen.
A large cactus can fall without any warning if it has developed rot.
Your County Extension Office may also have a list of specialist in your area.
