Rose of Sharon

Established 12′ X 12′ carnation-flowered rose of sharon is looking threadbare. Previously lush and thriving with no fertilizer or special care. It’s in full sun, has no insects, no yellow leaves, just branches that are less full than before. It looks sad and I can’t figure out what’s wrong. Nothing has changed in ground conditions. A nearby wild cherry (serotina) was taken down before leaf-out, but without damage anywhere. What could be the problem?

Rose of Sharon bushes benefit a lot from occasional pruning, particularly if they’re several years old. In late fall, try doing some serious rejuvenation pruning – that might be all the plant needs to come back strong in the spring. This article will tell you more about it:
