Root Bound Potted Amaryllis

I have a giant potted amaryllis bulb that is 10 years old. It blooms every year and has had several side baby bulbs. It is root bound and ready to bloom again. Is it possible to remove all these roots without damaging the bulb. Is there a proper time to do this?
