Gardening Know How Questions & Answers - https://questions.gardeningknowhow.comI have had an asparagus bed for twenty plus years and weeds have been a problem. Now I am planting a new asparagus bed this spring and would like to know about mulching the new bed. Once planted, can a layer of mulch be put over it to control weeds? The mulch would be last year’s leaves. I just read about corn meal to control weeds. Can this be used on the bed before the spears appear or would it be better used after?

Yes, you should keep your asparagus bed well-mulched from the start and shredded leaves will serve you well.

Cornmeal – If planting from crowns (which I assume you are), you can apply cornmeal right away. If planting from seed you will want to wait until the seeds are grown up a bit. If applied too early, it can prevent these seeds from sprouting.
