Pruning Crape Myrtle Trees

I have three beautiful crape myrtle trees that are about 12 feet high. There are no suckers around the bottom. I live in Holden Beach, NC and would like to know what time of year is best to trim the upper branches (there are still dead blossoms on them) and how far back to cut them. I want to maintain a natural look to my trees.
