pruning crepe myrtle bush

I live in New Jersey and our crepe myrtles are about 6-7 feet tall. They still have pods on them. I am worried about snow in the winter and the branches being too weak to support the snow. Can I trim them down now instead of late winter?

Trimming now is not recommended because the trimmed ends are more susceptible to freeze damage. If you’re worried about damage from snow, you can gather up the branches and run twine around them to tie them together.
