Pruning banana shrub

Can I cut back a shrub that is about 8 feet tall to about 4 ft without killing it?

It’s best to keep the height reduction and removal of foliage to 25% maximum at one time, in a year. The more extreme reduction of 50% may not kill it, but there are possible detrimental effects.
