Ponytail palms

I had a 35 year old ponytail palm that just died. The bulb softened, the top drooped and it just recently fell over. What could cause this? It was repotted a few years ago. It was purchased at about a foot tall and was about 15 feet when it died. I have several other old big ponytail and want to prevent this from happening to them! Thank you! I feel like I’ve lost a kid or pet.

Overwatering is the most common cause of loss of Ponytail Palms.
Constantly soggy soil and roots will cause the roots and bulb to rot.
Pests and disease could also be reasons for the loss of a plant, of course sometimes the reason is not clear.
