Gardening Know How Questions & Answers - https://questions.gardeningknowhow.complanted late feb 2018, now 50cm above top of the spiral. I would like side growth from the soil up. will the spirals prohibit/ severely restrict side buds forming? no known rabbits/deer in the vicinity.

Yes you can remove the protective wrap, and when you do, the lower stems will be more likely to form lateral buds and foliage.
