Planting Hostas at Base of Decorative Tree

The small decorative red Japanese maple tree that I have always has weeds growing beneath it. I have tried weed stop with stone around it, but the weeds still grow through. Could I plant a circle of hostas at the base or would that be a deterrent to the growth of the maple? Any other suggestions appreciated.

Yes, you can plant them around the tree. Many hostas are grown this way and most are perfectly at home beneath trees. I would suggest planting them carefully though, so as not to damage any of the tree’s root system and allow a couple inches of space between the plants and the tree trunk.
