Planter for green wall

Question

I am contacting you regarding the planter. Let me introduce you with idea. I bought 4-Pocket Vertical Hanging Planter made from felt with specifications with dimension: 30.5 x 106 cm/12.01 x 41.73″ in order to build myself green wall. I am in love with green wall 🙂

Since my new planter is not water proof, I potted Ocean Spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum) in plastic bag with sponge in bottom to absorb excess water. Just above the sponge is plastic net in order to make drainage (photo2). For self-watering I used small plastic bottle in upside-down position. As you can see, it is not quite straight upside-down, but I believe it will work. (photo 1). I uploaded images of it, so you can see it yourself. I really don’t want to kill plant with my ignorance. What do you think about it? Do you have any tips? Will it even work?

May I ask one more question regarding Ivy, if it is not a hassle for you? As I mentioned, my vision is to have green wall in my apartment. In order to do so, beside that planter, recently I got myself an Ivy (I believe it is a English Ivy). Could I use same technical solution (same type of planter, drainage, watering) for Ivy that I had used for Spider plant? To put planter with Ivy near window and then some net or wood fence on wall, so they could expand toward spider plants?

I really hope that I have come to right place. Since I am from Bosnia, it is far from easy to find some expert on plants, especially someone who is ready to think outside the box…so I really need a advice from someone who has experience.

What an interesting experiment.

Only time will tell if your technique works though I suspect over time the plants may decline since controlling the watering and nutrition may be difficult.

Could you please explain it? Why do you predict problems in watering and nutrition? Any advice regard this, would be more than appreciated 🙂
