Plant Sizes

How much clearance do I need for various vegetables in a container garden? In other words, does a tomato plant require two feet or four feet above the soil? How much clearance for snap beans, parsley, and other vegetables that grow well in small (1-2 gallon) containers? What vegetables would you recommend?
