Peace Lily

Question

This plant is indoors with A/C on and very little light. I have it planted in a self-watering pot. The leaves are turning yellow to black. I have fertilized once with liquid Miracle Grow. Can you please tell me what to do to get this plant healthy?

Self watering containers are terrible for peace lilies. The constant moisture almost always rots them, especially in low light. If you want to try to save this plant, carefully take it out of that container and put it into something with drainage. You’ll probably find alot of the roots are already dead. Remove as much of the old soil/dead roots as you can, and plant it in good potting soil or potting mix. Don’t water again until the soil in the center of the plant feels soft and cool, and barely sticks together if you squeeze some between your fingers. If you can give it more light, do so. The AC is not a factor. Peace lilies need at least a little light – you should be able to read a book in the light the plant is in during the day. If not, you need a lower light plant – a sanseveria or aspidistra is the lowest there is. In the future, water peace lilies when the leaves are just beginning to droop on the stems, to avoid overwatering problems.
