On Growing Horseradish

A co-worker gave me horseradish roots/plants that she dug up from her garden. When I plant them, do I plant the whole plant or just the root, and does the plant need full sun?

You can plant either the root only, or the whole plant. Horseradish is very hardy, and you should have no trouble getting it to grow. However, be aware that it will be very hard to control its growth, and it will take over your garden.
I spent many hours this past spring digging up the horseradish roots to eradicate them. Some of the roots were several feet long and had penetrated the hard clay below the top soil. I will never plant horseradish again!
