It's possible a critter ate them, or in the case of tulips, don't do well in warm areas and are treated as annuals. Also, it's important to let the foliage die back before removing it. That regenerates the bulb for the next year. A soil test will help determine if the soil fertility is a problem. Also, bulbs need well-draining soil or they will rot.
