cold damaged magnolia

Need help after COLD winter damaged one trunk of a two-trunk MAGNOLIA shrub/small tree. It was planted last summer by my builder. Most branches off that trunk died. Now I have dozens of new growth coming low on that trunk and the stubs of the branches. Do I thin out this new growth or leave it alone? (Wish I knew how to attach a picture for you) Thank you!

I personally would trim the bottom growth off and prune it up to have a bare trunk. I would not do this until this fall when the tree has gone dormant, or really the best time would be to wait until spring.

Here is a couple of links for you.
