snow gum dripping from the leaves

We have a large Snow Gum that, for the first time (we have been here 23 years), is spraying gum resin over a wide area of our paths. What is causing this, can it be stopped and what is the best way to get rid of the VERY sticky gum all over the paths?

Your tree has an infestation and the Honeydew that is falling from the tree is actually the insects secretions.
