My Irish moss is shooting out tall pieces in the middle

My Irish moss is shooting out tall pieces in the middle of the patch. I can pull it out in clumps, which are bare underneath. I’ve grown it for years, and have never had it happen until last year, and now this. I live in zone 6. This occurs around mid-July. The area gets sun until noon, then is shaded. I’m not sure what causes this, is it normal?

Thanks,

Kristine

It’s difficult to say from just your description. It could be a seed head that is forming.
If if is not rooted though, it’s possible it is another plant or weed pushing through the moss.

From my experience, Irish Moss can die off for unknown reasons, even after being established for several years. The root structure is shallow and can be damaged easily.
