My bamboo that I planted last year has very thin stalks

Is this normal, should I do something ?

I think the photo with the article below has thin stalks. It seems to depend on the variety. Widths vary up to more than 8 inches. See if you can find the variety you have and what the expected width will be. Here is general care:
