Multi Head Sagos

I have two sago palms out front that have developed multiple (and unruly) heads. One has 5 and the other 3. The trunks at 10-12 in in diameter and 24 inches tall. The plants are probably 10 years old. Should I cut the trunks off near the ground and hope they grow singularly again? If so, when should this be done?
