it stays in full sun, was watering perhaps a bit two much, but have cut that back.

That is never a good sign, especially if you've overwatered. You don't say what kind of plant it is, but if it is in a pot, I would repot in fresh soil. If it's in the ground, you may need to stake it and do not water till the ground is dry around it.
