Magnolia tree in pot

Is it wise to trim the centre out of a magnolia tree in a pot? It is getting too tall?

Topping the tree will not work to keep a tree small or is it recommended.

Pruning should be minimal and a potted Magnolia, though slow growing may outgrow it’s container and need to be placed into the ground.
