what would cause lilly plants to have broken plants at the root they have been in for 5 plus years

It could be damage from pests in the garden; rabbits, moles, voles as and example.
Excess water or poorly draining soil also could cause the stem to rot and the bulb.
Look for any damage to other plants in your garden.
