Killing trees

I have some trees, 3-9 feet high, growing in a stone wall and wish to kill them. It is hard to get close enough to cut them. I wish to kill them by applying some poison. It would be most easily done with liquid. Should I apply a solution of salt? If so, how diluted should it be (i.e. how much salt per gallon of water)? Might caustic soda be better?
