Japanese Maple

I have one half of my Japanese maple, which is a full grown, well estblished tree, that looks normal, with healthy bark and plenty of leaves and the other half has no leaves and most of the bark has fallen off of the trunks. It is the usual shape with the trunk branching out low to the ground with a lot of main trunks. I only noticed this when it first came into leaf this year. Can you tell me what is wrong? I am in the southeast of southern Australia.

It would be hard to diagnosis precisely without knowing other symptoms or being able to examine the tree, but it is likely a fungus. I would recommed treating the tree with neem oil, which will kill any fungus that are affecting it. You may also want to have a local tree expert look at the tree so that it can be more accurately diagnosed.
