Yes, there are several risks associated with doing this. Many people still hang on to the old misconception that this is healthy for a palm tree, when in reality this coating of dead leaves help protect it from the elements!
Doing so may make the tree more visually appealing, but it comes with potential risks. It does not always cause problems, but it definitely makes the tree more prone to the environment and disease.
