is my smoke bush still alive?

My mom gave me a smoke bush at the end of the growing season last year. It was in a pot, and I wanted to put it in the ground, but wasn’t sure where. I left it in the container and stored it in my shed over winter (as I’ve read to do). Now I am ready to put it in the ground, but I am not sure it’s alive. I had cut it back before storing it over winter and nothing is growing back on it right now. Help?? I live in zone 5 and we had an extremely mild winter, temps ranging between 20-60 degrees F. ? Thanks so much!
