Is My Chinese Pistache Dead?

The main trunk of the tree dried up since end of last summer and it does not come back alive this spring, however small branches sprouting from the root . What happened ? do i have to remove it ?

The main tree, likely, died. It looks to be shooting up replacements from the roots, however.

Fortunately, these are grown on their own roots, and not grafted. This means that the exact same tree is growing from the roots.

Thank you BushDoctor. I reduced my irrigation in the middle of last summer which caused the tree to dried up so fast. There's an orange tree nearby which also has dried up now. Was it the root cause? what should i do to prevent this from happening again ? Also What do I do next, should i cut the main trunk to allow the new grown tree to spruce up? Thanks.

Usually, when a tree dies as yours has, the cause was either bacterial or fungal. Likely bacterial given the new growth. Usually, they show face in warm weather, and use the extra water as a means to thrive in such warm weather. The tree can survive drier conditions than the bacteria, but the damage has been done. Unless the infection is treated, it will return each year, typically. Bactericides and proper tree maintenance will be in order.

Also, yes, prune any dead or affected growth and discard away from the area.
