Irisis removing dead leaves

I live in Puyallup Washington. I have Iris. They bloomed and then the leaves died. This last weekend I removed all the dead leaves. But I now see the buds coming up and I am wondering if I should have left the dead leaves to protect the buds in the cold winter with the snow coming.

It was probably not the best idea to cut the leaves all of the way down. There is a good chance that they will still survive, as they are pretty resilient, but the proper way to store these can be found Here: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/bulbs/iris/storing-iris-rhizomes.htm [1]
