Increasing Plant Growth by Injecting Sugars

I am in a biology lab class that is trying to measure the outcomes of intravenous introduction of sugar into plants to increase growth. Are there any proper or plausible methods that are applicable or even close to the idea of increasing plant growth?

It seems there was a study done in 2001. The only part I remember is that it affected bloom time.
