The bulbs need to be protected from freezing weather and too much moisture. The best thing to do is store the containers in the garage after planting and lightly watering. Leave them in the garage till spring and the bulbs start to sprout. Then move them outside to a sunny area and continue to water as needed.
If the pots are too large to move, you can cover them with mulch and wrap the pots in burlap or bubblewrap to protect the bulbs from freezing. Also protect them from a lot of moisture, which could rot the bulbs.
