I Started Apple Trees From Seeds. What Do I Do For The Winter?

Hello. I started apple trees from seeds this spring. I’m trying to decide what to do with them for the winter. Do I plant them? Keep them in pots or buckets? Indoor or outdoor? This is my first time. I’m in Northern NY. Thanks Ryan

It will be best if you know the exact cultivar, so that you can know exact chill hour requirements. Once you know how many chill hours that it requires, you can decide whether to leave in container or plant outside.

This year, I would say leave it in container and bring it inside for the winter. This will offer a better chance when you plant it out next spring, should it be a cultivar suited for your area.

Unfortunately, these were started from seeds from a small apple tree I found growing on my property. I don’t know the cultivar, it’s likely some wild mix but it grows in my climate I guess. What would you recommend in this situation? Thanks
