Rose of sharon

Question

How should I fertilize and prune my old rose of sharon, when and how much? My rose of sharon grows on the northeast side of my home. I pruned it lightly last early spring and fertilized with osmocote. (We are new to this old house). It grew so much that it appeared to get top-heavy and when it rained, the branches drooped toward the ground so much so that I thought it might uproot. We propped the branches for the duration of the season and now I need help in determining what to do with this bush so I can eliminate the props and provide the proper care to protect this plant. I don’t have a picture.

You can trim it that way if you would like. It is a good way to rejuvenate the plant. This article can give you some other methods:

I would look for one with a higher phosphorus (middle number), as this would promote healthier and more blooms. You can also use a “bloom booster” fertilizer or add some bone meal to the soil to help add some phosphorus.
