How Do You Prune a Smoke Tree/Shrub?

I live in San Francisco and live in Noe Valley, a great weather area. Right now, it’s 72 degrees outside and I was pruning my smoke tree because it’s getting scraggly and not very showy. I’ve started pruning it with a rose pruning method, but would it be better for me to really attack it?
