How do I prune 3 foot Jade?

This jade plant is 25 year’s old or more. Means a lot to me. I have trimmed pieces off of it, transplanted a few times but never pruned. It has a healthy trunk/stem but leaves are only at top. I am afraid to prune because I don’t want it to die. Help!! Would love for it to be shorter and have a fuller lead coverage.
