Horseradish

My brother that lives in Sheridan, WY wants to know why his horseradish isn’t hot anymore. He hasn’t fertilized it or anything, just seems to have lost its zing. Do you have any thoughts on this?

If it is planted near a lawn that gets fertilized, the runoff from the lawn could be giving it too much nitrogen. This could be affecting the flavor as well as the size of the root (root would be smaller with too much nitrogen). It may also be an issue with preparation. If he is adding vinegar too soon after grinding, this will dramatically decrease how hot it is.
