Hibiscus Winter Care

Live in Iowa with freezing and below temperatures. How should I winter it? We are gone for the winter. Give me a simple solution of the hibiscus care for winter. We do have a basement, so should I cut it back to bring it in for the winter? Does it need water then? Right now it has big red-pink blooms and it just started booming (now in July). Also, tell me when and what to do in returning it back outside after there is no more freezing or frost temp.

You will need to get a friend to take care of your hibiscus (I am assuming it is a tropical variety in a pot?) – they will be rewarded with winter blooms in the house. They will require more water than they will get unattended in the basement. And an occasional feeding. Next Spring, after ALL danger of frost is past, you can return it to the sun. YOu might want to slowly introduce it so full sun so it has a chance to acclimate. Just a few hours of sun at first and then gradually increase. I would recommend providing new potting soil and they are easy to transplant. Fertilize every two weeks or so outdoors.
