old apple tree

We have an old apple tree loaded with apples that we love having in our yard. Several comments over the years have been made suggesting we get rid of it. We want to save it. The main problem, a large limb broke next to the trunk from the weight of the apples. The same thing happened last year on the other side. Should I splint it with large boards and ace bandages? If I did splint it in this manner, can I use screws in the tree to hold the boards in place or would tight ace bandages and boards give enough support?

Also, the inside of the tree has been exposed for about two weeks. Should I put something on it to prevent disease (home remedy if possible) before I cover it? Thank you for taking time out of your day to help me:)

Attaching boards and wrapping limbs would not be recommend.
If the branches can be pruned off of the tree for the health and safety of the tree, this would be the best approach.
You may want to bring in a professional to access the situation and safely do the pruning.
