Hanging geranium care

I have a hanging geranium that has been neglected and has proceeded to get lon spindly legs and barely any leaves. an I cut it back almost to the roots and then try pinching to encourage bushy growth?

Don’t cut the entire plant down now, during it’s growing season.
The stems must have green leaves to withstand the prune and never cut back to bare or woody stems.
After pruning give them a feeding of diluted balanced fertilizer to help with prune shock.
Prune in stages if possible.
