I probably will acquire some my church is giving away, and I know each plant should be divided before being set out again. I probably will keep the mums as container plants on my unheated back porch over the winter.

There are different types of mums.
Make sure you have Hardy Mums if you plan on keeping for more than one season.
You really should not need to divide a mum at this point.
