growing basil

Hi- Is there a trick to growing basil??? i have it planted in pots , in the gardens, it gets full sun or part sun- i have bought it from different suppliers- its bright green for about 3 days then stars to pale, the leaves sometimes get a blackish mild on them, or they yellow !!! No matter what I do I have no luck with this seemingly simple herb! HELP!
