Fig Tree “burrower”

Is there some type of creature that burrows into the limbs of fig trees? We have a tree that is approximately 6-7 years old and it is covered with little spikes. The tree has no buds at all this year and all the small branches are very brittle. We had a great crop of figs last year, but are wondering if this tree needs to be taken out. Sending two photos below.

Fig Tree borer’s are likely the cause.
