Fertilizing Potted Dwarf Gardenia

It is theĀ first of March here in southwest central Florida, and my potted dwarf gardenias look very healthy and have many small buds. I haven’t fertilized the plants in at least two months. My concern is that the small buds (which have been on the plants for about a month now) don’t seem to want to grow and open. Am I just being impatient, or do I need to try some azalea fertilizer? They also get morning sun and afternoon shade. Do they need more sun?
