I have a Scotch Pine in my garden, that sadly needs to be felled due to lightening damage. I have been told that I can either have it removed completely including the roots, or I can have it lobbed which would leave a stump. I wondered what the pros and cons were for both. Secondly, I am looking to replace the tree, and I really like the look of a scotch pine, but it would be good to have a tree that doesn’t shed pine cones. Is there a type of scotch pine that I can purchase that doesn’t shed pine cones? I hope you are able to help on my questions and many thanks for your time. Sarah

If you intend to plant another tree there, then you MUST remove the stump. This article will help you to do so:

Choosing a male scotch pine will reduce the cone drop, though there is still a chance that it will happen to some degree.
In fact, choosing a male of any monoecious pine will reduce cone drop.
