Failing in composting

I can never get my composting to start.. I put green with brown stuff and turn everyday. But I never feel heat in my pile. Plus, when I turn the pile daily, green stuff will emerge and attract flies. How to make flies go away or can I just cover a layer of soil and not turn them? And how can I actually make the process start?
